A new study in the New England Journal of Medicine finds that Viagra may be the answer to ED.
The study, which is being conducted in France and published online inJournal of the American Medical Association, found that Viagra is not the most commonly used ED drug. It may have the potential to be the only medication in the United States to treat erectile dysfunction, according to an editorial in the New England Journal of Medicine.
Viagra, the brand name for sildenafil citrate, is a drug that has been around for more than 50 years. But the drugs that are often prescribed for erectile dysfunction are not the only treatment available. Viagra is also known as sildenafil citrate, which is the generic name for the drug sildenafil.
The study authors write inThe New England Journal of Medicine, for the journal,The Lancetthat "Viagra is not new for the general public. It was first introduced in the United States in the late 1950s but later developed in the developing world to treat the symptoms of erectile dysfunction (ED)."
"In this new era of ED medications, there is no other drug that is better than Viagra," said Dr. Andrew McCullough, the chief medical officer at New England Journal of Medicine.
"In our clinical trials, it worked well and did not cause men to feel as if they were having difficulty getting and keeping an erection."
The study was funded by Pfizer Inc., which makes Viagra, and AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals LP, which makes its own erectile dysfunction medication, AstraZeneca Plc.
Viagra, which the authors call a "potential treatment for erectile dysfunction," was launched in the U. S. in 1998 and approved in the United Kingdom in 1999.
In the New England Journal of Medicine, the study found that "Viagra is an appropriate treatment for ED because it is safe and effective."
Sildenafil was also studied as an additional treatment for pulmonary arterial hypertension, a type of high blood pressure in the arteries of the lungs that is linked to chest pain.
But in the U. S., the researchers say they are unable to confirm that Viagra is the treatment of choice for ED.
"It's a matter of whether it is safe, safe and effective for general health and the general public," the authors write.
"It is not a drug that is indicated in the treatment of erectile dysfunction, and it is not used in patients with ED."
In the U. S., the researchers say the drugs are effective in men with erectile dysfunction who are not candidates for the treatment of ED, and they suggest that "Viagra may be the drug of choice."
And in France, Viagra is still considered the second-best-selling drug in the U. S., behind Cialis, Pfizer Inc.'s Viagra, which is marketed as a cheaper alternative to Cialis.
Viagra was launched in France in 1998, and it has since been approved by the U. Food and Drug Administration. However, a study conducted in 2002 found that the drug had a lower incidence of ED than other drugs.
And while Viagra is not a treatment for ED, the authors say it may be the only drug that is effective in treating ED, and it has the potential to be the treatment of choice for men with ED.
